Anyways, Gill is a pretty inconsistent character with a minimum of four separate characterizations across Fate medium.

Also, if yours looking for an origin story try the Epic of Gilgamesh. It's only a couple of millennia old.

I've got to say, Gil got a lot of character development in Babylon. To see him go from the arrogant orphan killing cunt in UBW to a tragic hero who despite seeing nothing but everyone dying in every future he still pushes forward. And even if they do succeed his world and him will disappear to right humanities proper history. But he keeps walking forward to his inevitable doom. For the good of humanity.

A beautiful redemption arc, IMO.

Nasu barely had a character in mind when he wrote FSN beyond "pride before the fall". It's Zero that starts him up with an actual persona. Cold, hedonistic, but principled in the oddest ways. By CCC, you get a good picture of who he is and how he thinks: A king who doubles as a judge, meaning he is free to do whatever he wnats, and arbitrate others by his own standards, and with impunity.

However, come FGO, his harshness gets severely downplayed. It's almost cpmical how whitewashed they've made his present self. Casgil makes sense, but Archer GIl should still be a fairly evil man.

There's an origin story, but that has little to do with why he becomes a little shit. They try to explain it in the series, but it's not enough and fairly half-assed. Bottom line is he's an asshole simply because he is and that's unfortunately it.

You should watch Babylon instead if you want a better version of Gil.
