Violette makes sense. Throughout her story, she is consistently herself in the setting and given her backstory. Through her artfully crafted variety of autism, she can be both an experienced soldier, and a cute waifu. And it makes sense. It’s believable; it’s understandable as something that a human being could be.
Arturia, on the other hand, has a similarly difficult task: to fill the roles of hardened war veteran and a cute, shy, naive waifu. Saber has supposedly led armies, fought in battle. She’s killed people with a sword, she’s seen friends and comrades die in front of her after suffering the same. She was a political leader, a statesman. But unlike Violette, where do you see all these things in her character? How do you go from all that, to the blushing, innocent, naive blob she so often is elsewhere? Your brain twists itself in knots trying to make the contradictions fit, and you can’t help the whole time but notice how lacking in intelligence and communication skills Saber is required to be in order to maintain tension and momentum in the plot.
I really hate Fate. It has so much promise, but always finds a way to undermine your efforts to stay engaged with its stories and characters, and to wrestle you into disillusionment and disappointment. I regret everything from Fate I’ve seen except CarnivalP and Zero

When she's retarded, it makes sense. When Arturia is retarded, it's a plothole and bad writing. It's a sublte difference, but significant. Saber is the more interesting character, but also the more difficult one to write well, and Nasu fucked up. Should've kept the character a man.

Not to the extreme and ridiculous degree that is required for plot convenience, obviously. And that entire subplot is retarded anyway. Everyone "just couldn't handle how perfect she was," so therefore "it was her fault that everybody started being a piece of shit" because "she didn't manage them well enough." That's stupid, and seems to be a reaching, grasping effort to find a way to criticize Artoria's rule without diminishing her idealistic character. For what reason? It's absurd.
