hxh is no doubt more inspired and original than yyh (although I'd rewatch Yu Yu Hakusho over hunter x hunter anyday) but the character interactions and chemistry of Yu Yu Hakushos main characters are unmatched. They literally carry a generic shonen story. Now imagine if they were actually in a better written story like hxh? Hell, put Gon and friends in Yu Yu Hakusho and theres no way the could carry that show on their own likeability like yusuke and friends can.

Simplistic in narrative maybe. What sets apart Yu Yu Hakusho from other generic shonen is the chemistry and character interactions. Even if it's something as simple as a joke like it was always entertaining to watch these characters interact and you always believed they were friends and truly felt the bromance between all 4. People only think characters like Gon and killua are better because they had the fortune of being in a more adventurous story where togashi had more freedom to put them in more edgy emotional situations. Just because nobody has some full on emotional breakdown in Yu Yu Hakusho does not mean that they are in anyway "simplistic."

Gon is alright but his charisma and charm are nowhere near Yusukes levels. Gon isn’t even the best maincharacter in hunter x hunter, the spotlight is stolen by Kurapika and Killua
