it's baffling how many shonen authors don't get that writing a shit character ironically is still bad writing. The only time it's ever worked was Black Star in Soul Eater, and even then Okubo got too cocky and did it in Fire Force too

What I don't like about him is that they never did anything with him. Usually losers like him tend to have their day in the spotlight when they shine. Instead, he just got pegged as a perverted coward and never went past that. If he doesn't improve or turn more heroic, then he's just there to assure the reader that, no matter how pathetic Deku is, he's not the biggest loser of the manga.

Mineta is 1 step above a background character, and has no other traits to redeem him.

Other characters like Roshi, Jiraiya, Miroku have prominent roles in the story, and have things going for them to contrast their perving.

Pervert characters were always a thing but were never actively detested on forums/social media (nobody ever really cared enough to bicker over it), but this purple guy gets singled out because BNHA is also popular with the normalfag crowd who are notorious for virtue signalling.
Also he isn't attractive. If it was bakugo(?) or the fire-ice guy that was the pervert character all the twitter/tumblr-folk would be all over that shit, so it's a double-standard thing too.

Jiraiya and Roshi actually had other aspects to their character other than just being perverts, and had several serious and badass moments throughout the series. Roshi moreso in Dragonball than Z, but even then he managed to pull out something cool from time to time.
Mineta's entire character revolves around him being a pervert and nothing else.

Mineta has also the problem of not being anything else than the pervert, also he screams a lot.

They were both a lot more mentor than they were pervert.
