Thinking about it, if anything like SAO were to ever be produced, it would be rendered illegal the next day of it's trailer release. I mean there's so, SO MUCH that can go wrong if you were to be required to spend HOURS in a VR world, let alone days. Even if you discard the "you lose you die" thing, the game is designed to have you strapped in a bed.

Like honestly think about it: SAO was described as a new experience in VRMMORPG and, despite this, only 10k players made it to its debut. Something as massive as even the headgears suppose to the gaming world, the debut would've been massive with MILLIONS of players.

This means Kayaba being aware of what he was doing, decided to have it low profile and never spent a single nickel in advertisement. Instead, he only spreaded rumors in reddit-like forums and you wouldn't actually be able to buy the thing in any retail store (see above it's dubious legality even within the SAO verse), and even worse: even if it was to be mass produced, every head unit would be utterly expensive, and yet, he produced just a few and priced them so people would actually buy them.

This all makes sense if you think he (Kayaba) was a bit of a psycho and wasn't really motivated by money or power, etc.
