Is magical girls a dead genre?
Christopher Watson
Evan Butler
Considering the fact a magical girl show is this year's AOTY...
Nope.
Juan Thomas
Traditional mahou shoujo (Creamy Mami, Cardcaptor Sakura, Floral Magician Mary Bell) is dead, but group mahou shoujo (the stuff Sailor Moon gave birth to) is alive and well.
Ryder Walker
Blergh — it's a “genre” that is purely defined by a certain æsthetic, not by any other themes.
If Syana had a pink tutu instead of a black trenchcoat, it would be a magical girl series — that's all it takes.

The lewd transformations are the best

No?

There's Precure that embraces the classic majokko feels.
Adam Reed
There's a new precure literally every year

>tfw the GOAT is over
Jace Perez
Madoka was the final nail in the coffin. It lives on but it's edgy shit for weirdos. Mahou shoujo that is for actual little girls is the best.
Zachary Allen
If anything Precure is an indirect reason why the genre is "dead", becuase either no one wants to "compete" with it, or they think that it alone can fill the niche (it shouldn't).
Christian Martinez
Now it's either for babies, like Precure
Or super edgy, like Madoka
Miss the inbetween stuff
Henry Clark
The same reasoning should be applied to idols then, when in fact it's the opposite. The genre should have died after the Love Live/Idolmaster phenomenons, instead the 2D idols market is thriving.
There is certainly a reason why the genre is kinda dead and Precure are the undisputed queens of modern magical girls but I don't think that your argument is convincing. There must be something else. Just like Japan's traditional love for mecha anime has gradually died out or at least is not as strong as before, with the prevalence of new genres like isekai or different media themselves (gacha, LN...)
Robert Baker
the whole
>magical girls... but edgy and real?
killed the genre
like how zombie shit was killed off by
>zombies... but edgy and real?
killed off the genre
Jackson Peterson
Hopefully, because it's shit.
Levi Rivera
Ironically, vodoun zombies are far more terrifying than Hollywood zombies.

Watch Symphogear
Levi Fisher
I miss when magical girl shows weren't afraid to show panties.
Brody Jackson
I watched one episode years ago expecting hatsune miku and I got crazy violence. I was not ready for that much violence.
Angel Sanders
there is quite a bit of violence but the first episode is way edgier than the rest of the series
Wyatt Fisher
Mewkledreamy started a couple months ago and is a successful series from what I've seen.
Matthew Turner
Sneaking in innocent fanservice enjoyable secondary audiences was easy and they didn't have repercussions due to it. Even Japan has become more prude and cautious I guess.
Brayden Hall
Idolshit killed the mahou shoujo.
Wyatt Sanchez
But old mahou shoujo was idolshit.
Josiah Roberts
Madoka killed the mahou shoujo
Blake Rogers
Persia was the last good one
Xavier Young
Magical Emi was great you pleb.
Benjamin Myers
Persia and Sakura are the sexiest magical girls.
Thomas Walker
Mai Hime coming back will save Mahou Shoujo industry.
Gabriel Cooper
>is magical girls a dead genre?
No but 2020 will be the year Mahou Shoujo comes back with a vengeance.
Lincoln King
Those shows were pretty raunchy. Not sure if I can even post some of the shit from Yumi.
