What are your honest thoughts about Akira?
Akira
Isn't Akira basically just Godzilla on motorcycles?
Sick animations, sick aesthetics, good music, solid script and characters. I'd rate it dare i even say it? 8/10.
Extremely cozy watch during the summer time, with afternoon external light conditions, and my curtains, from my flat with a beef noodle wok and a czech beer, which is what i coincidentally did for the first time about a month back.
Absolutely delicious wok and beer, that was a good day.
Manga = 10/10
Movie = looks pretty but feels rushed and doesn't tell as good of a story
Movie's great, the manga is too, but I think there are a few moments it drops.
Good movie with amazing animation. Despite what others always say, the manga is not that great. It may be a great first volume and all, but the last volumes just get more and more boring.
Kind of, yeah.
Based.
I was thinking of reading the manga because the movie was way below by expectations.
The animation is god-tier.
opposite to me, when it becomes Mad Max it becomes great
Jesus Christ the man is based.
The movie? Ugly character design (not counting the intentionally ugly characters), a soundtrack that's out of place half the time, there's conflict and tragedy but it never did anything to make me care about the parties involved. I viewed it as annoying background noise. I can see it being magical if you experienced it as a child and watched it repeatedly trying to parse this weird scary futuristic world, but I have no such chemical high nostalgia for it. It's completely average at best.
Lmao, they all look like drawings from that tekuho guy
I didn't like it at all.
The manga had a better story.
>conflict and tragedy but it never did anything to make me care about the parties involved.
Yeah this is what I felt too.
Character design is subjective I think, and even though the animation is amazing the characters' expressions were static and didn't convey feelings well.
manga is good
I watched the movie for the first time a few weeks ago. I was amazed at it
10/10, they don't make em like that anymore
it's trash
best anime ever made
Honestly, OP. What do you expect people to reply with. It's baby's first anime for god's sake. You might as well ask then what they thought about Cowboy Bebop.
Here comes the faggot.
OP here. Cowboy Bebop is easily a 9/10 to me.
>inb4 if you think so you're new to anime!
And Akira is a 6/10. That's why I'm curious to hear more takes about one of the anime that made the medium popular throughout the world.
It's not a masterpiece at all imo, but it's not wrong to think differently and as you see people's opinions here are various and one the opposite of the other.
I just had a great idea for a new thread!
Yeah, you say that about Eva threads too?
disappointing ending
Animation was great but didn't live up to expectation I had for it with all the hype around it. I waited too long to watch it, I guess.
what's Eva?
Unironically, without trying to sound like a big brain man of culture animation connoisseur:
the destruction and explosions during the bit where Tetsuo is going godmode are FUCKING SICK
Thematically I love the escalation of man’s power to challenge a godlike being. Smalls arms fail to contain Tetsuo in the hospital, artillery and air support can’t stop him in the streets, experimental laser weaponry can barely slow him down, only because he’s never seen it before and finally the satellite laser does the most damage but still can’t put him down and does terrible damage to the city. After all that the Colonel and Kaneda going after him for a final face off was good, but Tetsuo being overcome by his own power felt a bit dissatisfying.
Entertaining as Akira was, the weakest part of it is where they attempt to explain exactly what is going on by bringing in an aging scientist type, complete in white lab coat, who mumbles something in front of some spherical computer display.
This section made no sense whatsoever, and resembled the technobabble spouted by Dr Who, or Scotty from Star Trek.
>scientist type, complete in white lab coat
the fuck else do you want as scientist to wear? hoodie and sweatpants?
"Hey, look! An old guy with glasses in a white lab coat is talking! That means that this nonsensical dialogue must have have some hot-shit hi-tech meaning that I am too thick to understand!"
Now, don't you have some dilithium crystals to re-polarize for the matter/anti-matter spillover from your energy converter, user?
Agreed. And the way Kei being possessed explains all the philosophy to Kaneda in the prison even though Kaneda doesn't give a fuck just because someone has to tell the audience also felt really forced and like most things was done way better in the manga.
I do't know, neither of these felt forced to me
Seeing as how you view this scene as one that successfully explained events, then could you please elaborate for the benefit of those of us who just didn't get it..?
I am not slagging off Akira, it was an enjoyable watch, but I won't pretend that this particular scene wasn't anything else except psuedo-science mumbo-jumbo.
HARD MODE: Avoid mentioning "power levels"
it me nut
