Anime Background Art

There is nothing more disgusting, nothing more embarrassing, nothing more pedestrian than the state of modern anime backgrounds. Nothing, absolutely nothing looks worse than cheap oversaturated digital attempts at realism. And don't get me started on all the fucking CGI hallways and surfaces.

What is so hard about getting an artist who does digital painting and just pay them to whip up some stylish minimalist backdrops like the ones in Serial Experiments Lain. Pic related looks better than almost every anime that aired this year. The only show with any memorable art so far was Somali and the forest spirit.

People complain about CGI and cheap character animation, but the loss of actual artistic touch going into background art is the biggest loss anime has seen in the last decade. Its fucking obnoxious that these slit-eyed jews think the modern look of anime is at all acceptable and all the young people who don't even know anything different should kill themselves.

Also the grass is all the same acid green color with no stylistic variations whatsoever. The fucking state of the industry these days

Stop watching cheap shows?

No one cares user, we all know they do it to cut cost and save time.
Heck some of the artists I know just use sketchup or blender to make the block-in/graybox and then proceed to draw on top of it to so to worry much in laying perspective lines and vanishing points.

Whats wrong with somehow realistic backgrounds? They can be more comfy, background like the ones in Monogatari feel awful to me without any place logic

There are exceptions, but they are fewer than in previuous 2 decades for example

Pleb opinion thread? Akira backgrounds suck, monogatari backgrounds make no sense

I'm 5 episodes in, show is so fucking boring but I am continuing to watch solely for the backgrounds.

The fact that backgrounds better in 1975 than nowadays is very alarming

At this point this thread is people tryharding to impose his opinion.

>Hey this background is better
>Why
>It's better you faggot

They are just art. To each his own

I’m not tryharding, it’s my opinion. You can have yours, I don’t care. I just wanted to share how beautiful hand drawn backgrounds look in comparison to most of the shit done nowadays. Kill la Kill did have some pretty good backgrounds though.

Fucking love this aesthetic

The grass, the trees, the bushes, everything.

Made in Abyss is a 10/10 adaptation for many reasons and one is the background art. But you know as well as I do it's not the norm. I hope they brought the same people in to work on the movie.

I can tell they do that. That's another issue, artists using this shit as a crutch in order to get garbage pumped out as quick as possible.

Shinkai movies are another example of an outlier, just like Made in Abyss. Imptettyr same the same people who worked on MiA and Kimi no na wa worked for Ghibli before.

HnK and SSR are more examples of adaptations that go above and beyond. Even cheap adaptations of yore used to look acceptable when you had people who knew how to use a paintbrush on the project.

And that's one of the things that really gets me though, we're already into summer and I can only think of one show from this year that looks at all respectable. It even had decent character animation and music too.
