because there was a lot of build up only for them to be useless in the grand scheme of things

Kubo has always been really bad at hyping certain character up only to have them get completely dabbed on once they actually fight.

Kubo is just way too addicted to making characters job. To make things worse, he can't make characters convincingly intelligent because he himself lacks intelligence nor can he make them convincingly powerful because feats of power require backgrounds to be drawn.

Because they weren't given anything to do without being there to job.
If memory serves, the only time a Vizard has ever done anything of accomplishment is when Shinji handed Grimmjow his ass, and even then for someone so strong to take that long to wipe Grimmjow's shit was disappointing

Kubo has an unhealthy obsession for introducing characters but he never fully thinks out what they actually add to the story. They get dropped faster than Ichigo's classmates.

Introduced in the first Arrancar attack, only relevant during the Battle for Karakura, but overshadowed by the captains. None of them did anything during the Quincy arc either.

Because while Kubo was good at designing characters with an interesting premise, he was bad at giving them purpose and fitting them into the series.
Same thing happened to half the captains and espada.

Fake Karakuri town arc was so fucking dull and these guys just losing most of their fights didn't help.

Because they jobbed to much. They should have been Necessary to defeat the Quincy given the whole hollow power = Quincy poison, and Urahara’s pills being temporary holloficstion.
But instead we just had to have them job so Renji could look good.

except Mayuri and Kenpachi (for the most part) Mayuri never lost a fight (he won his fight against Uryu, if Nemu didn't give Uryu the antidote he would have died there, and even then he still got the worst part of that fight as he lost his powers while Mayuri was completely healthy a couple weeks later)
and Kenpachi, who only had 1 legit loss in the whole series and was an off screen affair against the main antagonist of the final arc
Byakuya also had decent showings in general as well
I think he hand picked the 4 Captains that went to HM specifically to not have them lose to Aizen and keep their image intact
