I'd personally say he's FUCKING DEAD given that the rifle was anywhere between .308 and ,50 caliber. However the bullet also did shatter after tearing through the hull of the ship so its total velocity and force exerted per piece of lead was greatly reduced.

The thunderbolt magnet on the first try wasn't so much an asspull as convenience to keep the plot moving rather than have us wait around.
