Umasou was a great movie that on a lot of levels felt more personal and memorable to me than anything miyazaki had made. I dont think he does it because he loves it. He's old enough to have grown up in the hard times of post war japan. He suffered and that suffering stuck to him, so he made anime to reach out to other people and try to change the world without telling people what to do cause they won't. This is the way of eastern buddhist thought/morality.

He succeeded and reached and inspired people, but because he became so great other people just wanted his approval. But he doesn't value the idea of being acknowledged, its how what you do actually effects people that he values, but he won't just say this. He won't tell people that he respects those who care about benefiting others without trying to get that love in return.

So he sees anime as a way of giving love to the world and transforming it, of making anime to do actual "work" but he doesn't say this because he thinks others won't listen.

I can't totally respect or look up to miyazaki because he's almost like a kid not letting go of a tiny grudge, he had the chance to work on tales of earthsea WITH his son and be a father, but instead he placed himself in the role of a judge. He loves the earth, he loves culture, he loves people and animals, but he doesn't love himself and he can't relate to someone who does or who reminds him of himself.
