Maybe Toriyama can write a whole Gohan being scared of potentially exposing his bro and friend to the traumatic shit he faced as a kid, their different upbringings and potential differences in seeking power that is contrasted with each other. Trunks wasn't a pussy. That's GT Trunks. Trunk was his usual self, but hardly a promising fighter, from what we saw.

I think they could have a chance at being relevant again, once Super goes past the end of Z. Until that happens, there isn't much they can do with them.
