If you like the idea of romanticism expressed in the format of a shounen manga or fairy tale like stories with a focus on strong emotions then One Piece is for you. It also has well developed world with a lot of intriguing mysteries but for me One Piece is about the character's emotional moments and romantic ideals.

No one can give you proof that it's good, it being the most successful comic and among the most critically acclaimed should be enough of a reason to give it a fair shot and see what all the buzz is about.

What the fuck are you talking about? One Piece is the least pretentious thing ever. It has a goofy and childish exterior on the surface and it never tries to take itself too seriously. Even some of the most serious moments have gags mixed in. It has a lot of depth beneath the surface if you go in to it but it never forces you into doing that.
