I'm not sure if they ever say what the katanas are made of, but obsidian seems like a terrible material to use considering how brittle it is, unless they had literally nothing else to use.

Small things like daggers/arrowheads/spear tips, but for a long sword that kind of needs to be able to take hits its still pretty terrible.
Like, if they're able to forge proper blades at all I feel like they'd be able to use other minerals they get from the cord shore to make shit even just tangentially better than a sword of brittle ass obsidian.

Yeah, but not many metals seem to come out of there, the only ones known to come out of the Cord Shore is precious soft metals. Obsidian's the best thing you have to work with if you have no industry, and it does very much seem like the gems lack an industry to melt metal.
