Keep in mind it's also possible to ascend to higher ranks in the pyramid without going through the heirarchy in order. for example. it's possible to go from the very bottom to say the lower labor aristocracy just by knowing the right people or via nepotism.

My brother went to a maritime academy and was making good money working in the gulf when oil was up. I kinda followed in his footsteps because I didn't have a great plan. Its long hours and away from home but not particularly hard and pays well. I made 88k first year out of college and just advanced my license after 2.5 years and bumped to 115k .
