It is intentional, at the beginning to his change to digital you could see how inconsistent and ugly his Guts' faces were, now they have become consistent and more pleasing to the eyes.
While not my favorite, over the last few chapters his new "digital" style has become much better, his lines are thinner again, and everything is much more consistent, I just wished he would reduce the "big heads" he has been giving some of the characters (the Griffith tax chapter is a good example of this).

It seems to be almost rejuvenated, in fact. During the trip to reach the ship he seemed to have aged a lot, but was always exhausted and injured. Now he has just taken off Caska's problem, even though he can't stay near her.
