it's the cute-creep. Basically studios and mangakas discovered that virgin otaku prefer big eyes, small mouth, small nose, soft and smooth silhouette so they started doing it more. Eventually this got progressively more exaggerated to the point where the nose and mouth are practically non existent anymore and the eyes are the center of attention. It's literally all about the eyes now. The eyes are all that matter; the nose and mouth only exist to add familiarity and to avoid treading in the uncanny valley.
A dot will suffice. A tiny line for the mouth will suffice. They exist only as a courtesy. Anime girls are repulsive to me. They look nothing like anything. They are simple exaggerated eyes in a smooth silhouette.
