It wasn't a 1v1 between Shanks and the Sea King. Shanks ran in rescue to Luffy while on the shore.
It was either save Luffy or kill the sea king, but the latter would've taken too long and might've gotten Luffy killed.

Naruto’s Hidan/Kakuzu arc was a masterpiece.
Bleach’s Soul Society was great but the hypnosis thing was retarded and clearly the writer didn’t plan it through.
