Reminder Kaworu is the best option for Shinji. Unlike Asuka, who is selfish and would only use Shinji to make herself feel better, and Rei, who can't really reciprocate his affection, Kaworu's love is pure and unconditional. His love is the only one that'd comfort Shinji, reminding him that he doesn't have to bare the weight of the world on his shoulders—that it's OK to let go. The only reason to be against Kaworu x Shinji is if you're a self-insertfag who views the characters not as "what's good for Shinji," but rather as "what makes my dick hard."
