Part of it was her just not wanting her kid to be facing world ending threats, she wanted that stuff to be handled by other people. Though also world ending threats were historically not a notable concern, they just suddenly started happening out of nowhere. However it's true that there should be no reason for him to get a job. They should have honestly been receiving some amount of money from Capsule Corp just for the rights to the alien space ship, or any number of other things.

Her opposing him fighting Cell wasn't. Her forcing him to focus on academic studies so much - even less so.

The only sensible, responsible and safe thing for him would be training constantly after defeating the Cell because he is the most competent fighter an Earth has. This way he protects himself since he can win easily and he protects everybody else.
And if an Earth faces an opponent a peak Gohan has trouble with, then it means that they would have been dead had he focused on studies anyway and all academic effort was for nothing.
