I never thought Masaki would actually die, but I also didn't think that they would try to kill him; I thought he was going for a fake out and destroy the horn that was supposedly controlling him - but no, he legit went for the kill.
I definitely didn't think the sacred beast would try to kill him not because he couldn't be saved, but because he thought that Masaki would be suffering too much even if he was saved.
