The animation clearly goes down in the old version while the 2011 version stays pretty steady the whole way. Youre pretty much right about the second point however, I wouldve loves to see a chimera arc in the old style. I guess Im trying to say is that the manga is better

I'd rather take an anime that starts with great animation and drops to mediocre animation, rather than one that starts below-average and stays below-average.

The 1999 HxH anime actually ties well into 2011 if you watched all the way up to the Greed Island Final OVA. Unfortunately, Greed Island Final's animation cannot compare to the 1999 series and its first OVA - the one with the Spiders, not to be mistaken with the first Greed Island OVA. As for which episode to watch for the 2011 version, I kinda forgot, just hunt it down yourself.

Read or new. New anime has very small changes and is overall very faithful to manga, plus the animation is consistently high quality. The old anime changes character personalities as well as some plot points so you will be confused if you listen to the assholes here saying you should watch that one first. People here just rec 1999 for its dingy 90s aesthetic.

i've seen a few key fights and scenes from 1999 and although they look visually great, something about 2011 feels better. for example in one small scene in kurapika vs uvo 2011, i like the way the camera pans out and there's a buildup of music that suddenly stops when the chain crushes uvo's heart.

with 1999 it feels like less is being done with the camera and soundtrack. idk how else to explain it. also i haven't read the manga so maybe the manga is way darker than 2011 portrays but something about 1999's tone feels too dark. hxh is a soft seinen not a true seinen. baited with that last part

another 2011 scene i prefer over 99's is when phinks catches killua. there's a slowdown and buildup in 2011 but 99 just plays it straight.

actually one thing about 99 i prefer is that phinks doesn't have that monologue where he describe's killua's actions. idk man it's a mix. these are ultimately minor things since the story is what stands out the most to me for hxh but if we're comparing adaptions i prefer 2011's overall.

It's somewhere between. It's a fun, energetically paneled and paced manga, it just isn't shy about showing violence, that's all. The 2011 version feels too cheerful and vibrant when the manga was gritty and the 1999 version was too dark when the manga was cheerful.
