Is it still the best OVA to this day?
Gabriel Green
Jason Anderson
OP here, sorry I meant to post this pic.
Tyler Young
No, Diebuster is better.
Justin Wright
Gunsmith Cats
Kayden Reed
This. L'arc-en-Ciel Malk is best girl
Evan Wright
The highs are high but the first half really drags
Adam White
Macross plus what?
Aaron Wood
By highs you mean that one animated nipple slip on bed right?
Adam Bennett
No I mean overtly ripping off only the breast portion of her outfit to save the world
Brayden Hill
fpbp
Jace Lewis
But Diebuster only becomes better if you already saw Gunbuster.
Nathaniel Morales
More like Diebuster tried to rip off Gunbuster's emotional resonance with its ending because it had no confidence in its own story
Mason Cruz
Okay but Diebuster >>> Gunbuster.
Jacob Martinez
Couldn't agree more but too be fair I haven't seen that many OVA's yet
Isaac Long
Probably
Luke Lopez
Absolute cringe, off yourself
Luis Butler
worst macross tbqh
Isaac Brown
Not while LOGH exists
Blake Jones
lol no
Oliver Cooper
Prove it.
Liam Rivera
Gunbuster: *Intentionally leaves how humanity is in the future up to viewer imagination, presumably because it transcends our perception of the nature of living species*
Diebuster: lol actually they're like us but with bigger robots XD
Jacob Ortiz
The part with the love interest dying is a bit too underdeveloped but the ending makes up for any flaws as it’s one of the greatest anime endings ever
Levi Miller
That'd be LotGH.
Chase Lee
>love interest dying is a bit too underdeveloped
I'll agree with that. I felt more sad hearing Freud's last words and knowing she never got to see them again. Broke my heart desu.
Xavier Rivera
This man was involved so it explains a lot.
Aiden Thompson
It's tied with LOGTH
And my personal second favourite ova, Giant Robo.
Aaron Johnson
I hate to be that guy, but I think Gunbuster is incredibly overrated. Influential... no doubt. But incredibly overrated.
The OVA has a lot of cool ideas and worldbuilding and at times the cinematography is gorgeous, but it’s too short for its own good. Characters arcs don’t feel natural in the slightest, and the plot moves along way too fast to care much about the stakes.
It’s a fun piece of history but Anno’s later series, Nadia and Evangelion, pretty much utilize everything that worked in Gunbuster and do it way better.
Joshua Howard
16:9 stretched
oh god
Joseph Peterson
Why does it look like he has saggy granny tits?
Owen Jenkins
true
Grayson Perez
Gunbuster is only genuinely good for the last 2 episodes.
It deserves all the praise it gets for the beautiful ending but the first couple of episodes are nothing outstanding.
Juan Richardson
I'd agree about it being short for all the things in it that could have been expanded on. There could have been more development with Jung's rivalry or Noriko's love interest or with Coach. The shift in stakes can be jarring with only six episodes. But I would also be wary about calling something old overrated when we have the benefit of hindsight. It's like you said other works built off of what it did and improved on it. That was possible because the foundation was laid.
Ian Sanchez
I don't think Diebuster heats the peak of Gunbuster but Diebuster is more evenly entertaining throughout.
Michael Sullivan
Diebusters ending while delivering the feels, was poorly written. Gunbuster succeded in both regards, that's why it's better.
Samuel Turner
No, that title goes to GaoGaiGar Final.
Robert Reed
It's garbage. The only halfway interesting thing about it is the ending.
Levi Walker
that and FLCL
Robert Perez
(same dude you responded to)
Believe me, I’m not trying to downplay Gunbuster’s influence and legacy towards Anno’s future work and other animators who were inspired by it. Gunbuster absolutely deserves that praise. It walked so Nadia, Eva, and many other series could run and fly.
I just don’t think it’s story or characters hold up for me personally. Personally, Noriko’s character development feels very unearned in episode 4. TTGL did something very similar with Simon’s character and I feel it worked better there because we had proper time to see him grow past his whiny and quitter attitude into a leader and a hero.
