Did you ever wonder where it all went wrong? How did Nico mess this story up so badly?
The short answer, as hard as it is to hear, is nothing went wrong with the story. Once you understand the larger plots and sub-plots hidden within the manga, you may also come to accept, that it progressed the only way it could have. Not even the yuribait could or should have changed that. The only thing, that will help us understand where it all went wrong, is finding out where the reality of the Watamote universe ended and the journey into Tomoko's subconscious began.
The only thing that went wrong is that we couldn't grow up and mature like Tomoko could. If you're unsatisfied with how Watamote is progressing it's only because you're jealous. Tomoko's life is moving in the direction that we all wish our own lives would.
Do not hate the manga, instead be proud of Tomoko and wish her well as she moves to the next stage of life.

Anime ending > anything in the manga that isn't in the anime The truth is that she doesn't make friends, not at least in that first year of high school. Art doesn't need to be realistic, but it's out of her character and doesn't fit in the narrative of the anime to make her have friends. Yu and her brother are her only actual friends. Everything that bad that happens that prevents her from making friends is her anxiety is fault, not others. She doesn't actually even have any physical handicap like being ugly or something. The anime manages to end badly and well at the same time because she realizes that she doesn't give a fuck about having friends because she likes staying in her room all day too much to have any.

I don't mind the idea of the anime ending but it was pretty abrupt and her "realization" seemed rather unprompted, plus we already had her crying after trying to tell herself she was happy spending all her time alone in her room so I don't really buy that suddenly declaring it doesn't matter and she totally doesn't care would be enough and she'd probably just go back to chasing popularity shortly after. Obviously it's because it's the last episode and they had to have some sort of closure knowing they probably wouldn't get a second season so I get it, but I definitely wouldn't say it's better than the way the manga concluded her first year with seeing herself in that senior who was on his own at graduation and slowly progressed from there.
I have been following Watamote since god knows when. I spammed her manga a lot on Zig Forums 8 years ago when she was still obscure, because I wanted her to be popular. Anyways, that worked. I wanted her to be popular, I wanted her to be better than me, even though she was literally me.

No one says you have to like it but I've been seeing posts like OP's for ages now, there's been tons of the same arguments about the change in direction already so you can't really blame people for just telling you to fuck off at this point either. I've lost interest in some other series and dropped them, but I don't spend years afterwards whining and saying they should make it so the MC was in a coma or something stupid like that, I just drop them and move on because there's plenty of manga out there.

This part was so relatable to me, seeing her having a panic attack in bed realizing she's wasting her time. I cried when I first saw it. I also cried when she was on those public stairs and she saw that the hot girl was wearing cute panties and she said all her accomplishments made that day were worthless. I'm not sure I get why she said that though, could someone explain?
I can see some people being interested in the current watamote, just not the original fans of the work, for the most part. But the anime should've ended on tomoko being hugged by what's-her-name in the animal costume. Greatest conclusion they could've had. But they ended it with whatever episode 12 was. Not bad, but not satisfying.
Im fine with tomoko growing up but end the fucking manga then. I didnt start reading this to watch the normalfag yuribait adventures on tomoko. The only reason im still reading is to see who she hooks up with i doubt anyone actually reads for the comedy anymore.
