>"Anno understands the Japanese national attraction to characters like Rei as the product of a stunted imaginative landscape born of Japan’s defeat in the Second World War. “Japan lost the war to the Americans,” he explains, seeming interested in his own words for the first time during our interview. “Since that time, the education we received is not one that creates adults. Even for us, people in their 40s, and for the generation older than me, in their 50s and 60s, there’s no reasonable model of what an adult should be like.” The theory that Japan’s defeat stripped the country of its independence and led to the creation of a nation of permanent children, weaklings forced to live under the protection of the American Big Daddy, is widely shared by artists and intellectuals in Japan. It is also a staple of popular cartoons, many of which feature a well-meaning government that turns out to be a facade concealing sinister and more powerful forces.

>Anno pauses for a moment, and gives a dark-browed stare out the window. “I don’t see any adults here in Japan,” he says, with a shrug. “The fact that you see salarymen reading manga and pornography on the trains and being unafraid, unashamed or anything, is something you wouldn’t have seen 30 years ago, with people who grew up under a different system of government. They would have been far too embarrassed to open a book of cartoons or dirty pictures on a train. But that’s what we have now in Japan. We are a country of children.” -Hideaki Anno

Sounds like a cope from a man who still likes tokushit

Based

I wonder what his thesis is on Asuka being officially more popular than Rei these days.

I remember him saying he wasn't surprised, because the "mystery" to Rei's character faded away after awhile or something.

this from perhaps Japan's biggest manchild of all people

>another jaded boomer thread
just die already

“When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”
-C.S. Lewis

based manchild Anno speaks the truth

It's true tho. Although I argue that in general the entire world has become filled with manchildren. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the triumph of Neo-Liberalism has left mankind in a nihilistic rut.

Asuka its his favorite.

Except this is happening to the west too. You see adults openly enthusiastic about comics
and marvel movies/porn conventions. The internet, and technology allows people to grow into adults without mentally maturing into an adult.

for some context/proof

boomer and 30 year old boomer nerds are absolutely seething that zoomers can openly like nerdy shit without getting bullied for it, like they did

Basically saying that without fascism/imperialism, the japanese are a nation of children.

Dare I say based?

based

>men no longer care about what others think
>somehow this is childish
>afraid of standing out, quietly conforms to what others think
>this is adultlike
?? explain this Annotards

B A S E D

wasn't the official fascist ideology one of the "emperor protecting his children" though?

they even had their big mommy with the whole "all Japanese are descended from the sun goddess" bullshit that the State Shinto authorities were promoting

Growing up was a mistake.

Based

Widespread access to the Internet and smartphones did that.

Fascism and all forms of communitarian/collectivist thinking is inherently infantilizing. Putting on the jackboots might make someone feel like a big strong man, but they're really submitting their will to their big daddy leader.

This is you

But Rei is full Yamato Nadeshiko, it's actually more japanese to like Rei than Asuka. Westernized cucks prefers Asuka which is a more childish character. I don't get why he blame Rei for Japan's problems. Japs wanting their womens to become Yamato Nadeshikos again is a good thing.

>T. Anno

based wahoo man

Spoken like a true amerimutt with no morals.

Absolutely wrong and unbased. Individualism and Collectivism are at their core, about self enrichment and safety. Fascism is about collective responsibility and duty.

I don't think the world has really changed though. Sports was the mass entertainment media for men 30 years ago, and sports is literally just children's games dressed up to be more "mature". All that's changed is the mass media.

Agree with the first, disagree with the second. Wouldn't children be embarrassed at doing things due to people's judgment and adults being confident enough to do things they want to do regardless of what people think?

based

he seems happy what's the problem?

this faggot wrote a book full of christcuck cope after his wife died (he fathered her two stepsons)

>without mentally maturing into an adult
And what does this mean though?

I'm too lazy to look up this text to determine when this interview was done, but this seems like an older Anno interview. I think he's more fully embraced the whole "out and proud" nerd culture more recently. Obviously he's always been an open otaku, but he comes from the age when otakus felt like they had to be ashamed of what they liked if they were too open about it. Now Anno is a lot less depressed and happier in general.

If you were an """intellectual""" you would know Japan fucking with the US was a dumb idea to begin with. You made your beds fuckers.

Humans are by nature pack animals. Thinking you can exist in a vacuum is silly. This is especially the case in Asian societies with centuries of Confucian paternalism.

>thinking for yourself is immoral

There are people who feel embarrassed when they do things that make themselves happy, and they project that on other people who know no shame.

>the 80 hour a week salaryman is a child
>meanwhile americans are willingly quitting their jobs to live off nigger bucks

Yeah no he's retarded

>Humans are by nature pack animals
LMAO our closest relatives are matriarchical monkeys which base their societies on rampant homosexual incest, something that the "society is derived from biology" collectivists will never tell you.

>Fascism is about collective responsibility and duty.
A compelling force, because society trains you to not care about others, only do your "duty" to help society (but really helping yourself). A better society would instill the values of helping other people out of helping others innately, not out of a sense of obligation to ultimately help yourself.

Different perspectives on what adult means, I guess. Westerners usually think of "independence" while Easterners tend more towards "seriousness" or "gravitas" from my experience.

Sounds like there’s something to it but is really a deconstructionist half truth at best. I think user has read one too many Western philosophers.

Anno: Fan criticism? In my opinion, most of them are just slander. They did not understand the work or even themselves. So they can only talk about superficial and methodological things. Just talk, but they still lack self-knowledge. Unable to understand the world and self objectively. These people actively want to contact the outside world, and they are within the range where they will never be harmed. So they will speak out their opinions out loud.

Anno: People who are bleeding and immersed in creation have a higher synchronization rate with "EVA". The people who idle and do nothing every day are really already...they are the so-called otaku, who only value their own world. It is futile to say to these people "Look at the outside world!" If you have contact with the world, you will no longer be an otaku, so they are firmly in their own world. They are just like intellectuals, binding the world they know to within the scope that they can understand. They don't need to know or agree with other things. Because those things have nothing to do with them.

Literally nothing wrong with any of those things. Returning to a matriarchal homo state would be better than what we have now.
Neo-Liberalism and Liberalism are not those better societies lol, they by design encourage nihilistic self indulgent consumerism.

Working is cringe and bluepilled. Epstein island was payed by your tax dollars and every one of our politicians fucks children.

so much worse than sitting on a phone scrolling through instagram like a vapid faggot

>Returning to a matriarchal homo state would be better than what we have now.
based anarcho primitivist returns to monke

That's true. I think it requires a bit of both.

>Neo-Liberalism and Liberalism are not those better societies lol, they by design encourage nihilistic self indulgent consumerism
Never said I supported either

This is a good quote, and one that I happen to agree with.

But there's a difference between not being afraid of reading kids' stuff, and reading kids' stuff exclusively. Anno was probably referring to the latter. I see it in my generation, the millennials. There are a shit-ton of people my age who only read YA books. They're still obsessed with Harry Potter. They talk incessantly about their nostalgia for when they were in high school.

You see that reflected in the majority of manga and anime produced today: it's all about high school kids, or even younger. I think that's why anime is having a boom in the West, because people my age only want to consume media about high school kids.
