Why is smoking so cool in anime?

Smoking looks cool in all media because the people who smoke already look cool. IRL it doesn't.

Smoking is the best. It forces you to spend time outside. If you ever get tired of being somewhere you
can just excuse yourself to smoke. It's a way to spend some time just reflecting about shit. The only downside
is the lung cancer. The only reason I haven't picked it up is because I know I'd get addicted.

smoking in fiction looks cool since smoke is a cool looking visual element!

any scene with smoke of any sort is instantly better than the same scene without smoke. same goes for rain, and they work together perfectly too. same with neon lights and stuff.

That's true but i can also breathe significantly better than with cigs, so I think it's a worthwhile tradeoff
