No one thought there was going to be a happy fairytale ending, Rebellion is pitifully easy to understand and trying so laughably hard to be super ultimate mega subversive is partially what made it such a cheesy fanfic-tier clusterfuck.

It didn't try too hard, it was the logical conclusion to Madoka. Homura's motivations were completely understandable and what she did was in no way "fanfic tier".

Just know what to expect. It's controversial for a very good reason, and if you want to fully understand why you need a good understanding of the main series, which is why I would recommend watching the first two movies as well, even if story-wise they don't have much of anything new.

If you do that and still end up feeling the way a lot of people rightly do, then read Maitake's hella gay doujinshi. It'll soothe your soul.
