From what I've heard, Korea is just on a totally different level in terms of its social stratification. There was a recent Korean movie called "Parasite" that got popular in the west that partly addressed that sort of thing. The culture is very much about appearance (hence why even men wear makeup, girls get plastic surgery at 16, etc.), and if you don't study hard and get into the right university or have rich parents who can send you overseas as a way to avoid having to take entrance exams, you're basically doomed to a horrible lower-tier existence. I remember a NYT article about young men trapped at the bottom of society desperately betting on Bitcoin as their only shot at a comfortable life.

I don't know about all Manhwa, but ToG is a total pile of shit. I'll tell you the moment I dropped it in disgust, it happens a few episodes ahead of you.
The entire time I was watching this, I was constantly thinking everything seemed really slow and uninteresting, but at least there seemed to be some real consequences and actual villains, with people actually killing and dying to succeed. It was a vaguely interesting atmosphere where THEORETICALLY anyone could betray anyone.
Then in one of the tests, one of the characters betrays and tries to kill another, and the TEST GETS CANCELLED, the instructors come out and save the guy, and everyone gets a lecture about working together and being friends.
THERE WERE NEVER ANY CONSEQUENCES! IT'S ALL FAKE! IT ONLY HAPPENS IN BACKSTORIES AND FLASHBACKS! NOTHING WILL EVER ACTUALLY HAPPEN!
