Throughout the story there have been many conflicts, some black and white in morality while others grey. The desperate struggle of humanity vs the titans, the mystery and motivation of the titan shifters, the peaceful yet sinister royal government and the coup d'etat against it, and the millenia spanning conflict between the Eldians and Marleyans. One might mistake any one of these as the conflict that defines the series, but upon closer inspection that struggle is at a metanarrative level.
There is truly no struggle in Shingeki no Kyojin greater than that of the EHchads vs the EMdogs. The EHchad is a reader who pays attention, observes and analyzes, and comes to the conclusion that the genocide and EH ending is not only the best ending for the series, but the most likely. EHchads stand for forward progress in storytelling, the breaking of shonen boundaries, the destruction of any preconceived notions of how a shonen main protagonist ought to behave, and challenging morality of their actions and acceptance of genocide for a better future. They allow themselves to be enlightened by EH, and are the highest echelon of Shingeki no Kyojin fans, scholars, intellectuals, innovators.
In opposition to these intellectual giants stands the EMfags. EMdogs, YHnogs, Erwlfujos, AAwhales, animeonlies, etc, these lot have gone by many names but at their core the cancer is the same. They are the poison of the fanbase and all discussion of the series. They thrive off of regurgitated headcanon, passed around so many times like a used whore that they become fact in their near hivemind of coping. Their views are then reinforced by the non-canon SHITnime, which although masquerading as a faithful adaptation in reality promotes the antithesis of the main story, the CHADnon CHADga.

In every facet of their ideal ending does not diverge from their first notion presented by Isayama. The characters will return right back to where they came from in a neat and tidy manner and live happily ever after like it once was(in their minds, that is, to suggest regressing to the starting point of the series to an EHgod would only provoke disgust. To go back to being peaceful cattle waiting to be slaughtered, never moving forward just as Mikasa had always wanted for Eren, yet to her slave-like personality could never challenge GODren's conviction) To propose anything else to them is an affront to their fragile worldview, and enrages them to no end.

They cannot accept an ending that doesn't involve EMAJC are reunited, Eren and Mikasa are married, all sins are forgiven, and Historia is lightly shoved off to the sacrificial pyre because they could never grow attached to her, she wasn't crucial to the story in their precious Season 1 of the SHITnime.All themes CHADsayGODma has interwoven throughout the story's run are ignored in favor of what makes them feel good, the repetition of their nostalgia of the 1st season and their tunblr posts and memes and fanfictions about it.
They really are simple beings, the EMrefuse, eternally static automatons lashing out at any challenge to their fabricated dream worlds. But fear not, EHscholars, for as the dawn breaks on Eren's rumbling, so too does it on the Hall of Anal Destruction. To be fair, the series is in the endgame and it's pretty much all laid bare in terms of plot. The stuff that's up in the air is inevitably going to remain unresolved until the final chapter anyways too.
Armin is a consistent character. Mikasa had potential in Trost but otherwise stayed stagnant. Hanji had all the cards stacked against her. Levi's the biggest disappoinment in terms of how much his character has regressed, to the point of comedy. Jean is the biggest disappoinment in terms of how much wasted potential he is.
