Anime homevideo

Which anime is in desperate need of a Blu-ray release?
My choices would be SZS and Hidamari Sketch.
It's like Shaft is against making money or something.
What anime is laughably bereft of a modern homevideo release?

Also, hopefully this fits within the rules, it's a legit conversation I'd like to have.
Lookin at you jannies!

Hidamari Sketch doesn't have a blu-ray release? Then what's sitting in my bookshelf right now...

Pretty sure they do they're just not released in the US. Or maybe they are unless has the Japanese versions. Keep in mind they're 10+ year old shows too so even if they have those releases they may be out of print if that happens in 10 years.

correct me if i'm wrong but isn't mid 00s anime impossible to release in BD cause the way it was made or something like that ?

There's a shit one missing the graduation arc, but who wants that.

really? why is there Haruhi and shit? i'd like an explanation good sir!

Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei doesn't even have a Japanese blu-ray release.

They can do bluray releases they just can't release them native 1080p. You can put SD video on a bluray. They did that for VOTOMS for instance.

Why tho?

Because stuff made on cel (and so on film) can be rescanned at higher resolutions (35mm film can do up to around 4k, 16mm can do around 1080p) while with digital you're stuck at whatever resolution you made it at, which for early and mid 00s shows was SD resolutions. That's why you can get 4k blurays for old movies, though they tend to film movies at 4k digitally these days I think. 70mm can go even higher.

I have blurays of Lain and Haruhi, are those both just on the margins of that era, or are they upscales?
Also, I would still buy some upscaled SZS.

Lain was cel so it's a native scan. Haruhi was digital so it's an upscale. Probably from DVD quality so 480p to 576p. I don't know exactly what their workflow was though but I'm sure it would be under 720p. The issue with native scans of cel anime is that they run them through shitty grain filters that fuck up the picture quality and sometimes you get something passable (I didn't notice any problems with Lain) or sometimes you get garbage (the Sailor Moon blurays are apparently pretty bad). Filtering cel anime is the norm (and a lot of anime used 16mm film instead of 35mm film, which probably makes it worse since there's less detail to start from) while it's rare in live action films but there have been some bad releases. I think Predator got a bad release but people complained enough that they released an unfiltered version.

retard

It is out of print for a long time.

Thanks user. I still think my Haruhi blus look good and would buy anime from the same era if there was a decent release.
Although I think there is something to say about the nostalgia of non-hd anime.

I just want a decent Lucky Star blu-ray, and I'm talking one with correct subtitles.

still no yuru yuri release

Both Hidamari and SZS have BD releases, SZS is even getting one in the west sometime in the near future.

My pick for most deserving would be the rest of the Yuusha series. GaoGaiGar's BD was gorgeous and the others deserve one too. Sunrise missed a chance to do it on the franchise 30th anniversary year this year.

Neither Hidamari nor SZS has a BD release, but I agree with the rest of your post.

The other seasons are there too, of course.

what about the OVAs, and what about English subs?

SZS got licensed last year and blu rays for s1 were supposed to come out this year but the virus probably fucked it

how did a virus delay a BD?

Maybe one day someone will get the BD's for zoku and finally put out a release which doesn't look really bad compared to other shows in the time period.
what the heck happened with the zoku raws/releases compared to stuff like maria holic?

Who gives a fuck about English subs? You can get those off your torrent site of choice.

I don't think Zoku and S1 will ever look good in HD resolutions. TV version is superior anyway, with gags like Perry gibberish removed in the disc release.

Some of us like to actually own the shows they appreciate.

And you can own it. And actually properly support the Japanese industry while doing it.

You're probably right, just unfortunate that other shows from 07 like Lucky Star and TTGL have good looking releases out but S1 and Zoku are kinda doomed

Why don't they release a version with English subs?

Hidamari Sketch has an english BD release. I know because I own it. Like has been said before, all digital tv anime will be upscaled in the BD release, and this is no exception, however it's not a huge deal considering DVD releases are typically at a lower than native resolution from the DigiBeta masters and as far as I can tell it wasn't blurry or smeary like poor upscales tend to be, but I'm also not really good at picking up on that stuff so don't take my word for it. The real problem is the subs which translated a few phrases/words incorrectly, and at least on one occasion used incorrect subs during an op.

Does your Blu-ray have the graduation OVAs?

How should I know I'm just a random user. Also, see
