watch texhnolyze or haibane renmei, Lain is not that great as everyone claims. There are some interesting themes in between, but they re not really elaborated neither exposed properly, its somewhat pretentious just for the sake of convoluted writing.

you probably could understand better the meaning behind some chapters, but the pacing is horrible for even a short anime as this one, it feels like it was done more for budget saving than an atmospheric intention as such is seen in texhnolyze (which is the double of chapters).

it can be pretentious, cool, and fun to watch. the two last things relate to a subjective nature, the first one it just states how the convoluted narrative creates an interesting mystery but without the need to be weird or unnecessarily fantasious, thats what makes it somewhat pretentious, it presents more themes that the ones that takes the time to develop properly.

it doesn't really come off as edgy at all, really the only reason that it's considered one of those "depressed" animes (idfk what to call them) is because of the animation style

im and the overall anime is not that it doesn't makes sense, its retroactive storytelling and probably you will get some details better on your second watch, but there are other themes presented in the series that still being pretentious weirdness just because Yasuyuki Ueda likes to be like that ( in the same way kojima is, minus the batshit insane over-the-top stuff). In the end you will have an interesting concept that could have gone in a more concrete plot such as seen in Texhnolyze or Ergo Proxy, winch is an improvement of pacing, storytelling and character writing of the same team that did Lain (or some part of it).
