The main appeal for me is the family stuff, it's quite cute and relaxing when it focuses on Kobayashi, Tohru and Kanna.
Also Kobayashi and Tohru relationship is the best.

She didn't really get any development because they shuffled chapter order around to make her appear earlier in the anime. In the manga she doesn't appear until after Tohru's dad does. As a result they didn't have much material to work with unless they pulled from later in the manga than they planned on adapting so she ended up just getting a bunch of scenes of her eating things and being pretty one note.

I liked how silly the tohru vs Kanna kamui was (an adaptation changing the story to take advantage of a new medium is welcome if done right) but the rest was just ok. I still prefer the manga. I just don't think it did the manga justice.
