Since the english manga is out of print I can only find it used when I'm lucky I've got a few volumes out of order and volume one. Maybe just bad scans? The art is kino and makes the villains look really gross and does its job.

I actually find the Kaiji anime to be realy well drawn. Sure, it has a crude artstyle but there's no instant of QUALITY or off-model shots and every scene has great shading and highligths, like that pic you posted
If I had to choose an artstyle that bothers me, it would be edgy shows with a cutesy artstyle like Made in Abyss or Madoka Majika.

Ajin CG was tolerable on its own. When you have read the manga and have any hopes, it turns into Berserk 2016 or hand shakers.
Same happened with jitsu wa warashi wa and monster musume doctor. They changed the designs of the characters so much for the latter, I just can't keep watching.

Kaiji pulled off an amazing upset by cheating. He got roped into a rigged game that was entirely set up against him, and he managed to pull through by 4D chess cheating. I can go more into detail, but that would spoil it. It's absolutely beautiful though and is some of the most tense shit I have read.

It takes a while until that particular game starts though, minefield mahjong is part 3 of the manga. It works like JoJo parts.
And this user is correct too. Kaiji cheating the cheaters is a stable of the series. But it is at its absolute best in part 3.

well here's the thing, in season 1 and 2 of anime i'd say he more of outsmarted the cheater so their cheats wouldn't work, besides with hyodo in season 1 where he actually tried to cheat and he failed, while i'm not sure if in the mahjong game he actually cheated him or outsmarted him.
