>Ryoko is just a random space pirate
>Washu isn't Ryoko's mother and her origin is just a less interesting version of OVA Ryoko's
this shit sucks so fucking bad

seriously, what were they thinking?
>actually watching past the original OVA
Thinking? Nothing. Literally left some monkeys with a keyboard and let them write the scripts.
Seriously?
Everyone was saying to watch Tenchi Universe but its kind of boring and I hate all of the changes they made. The music is cool though.
universe had a good beach episode
It's been a small eternity since I've seen this show, but seem to recall liking it more than the OVA. I liked the whole space adventure, Kiyone being the "straight man" to Mihoshi, and Tenchi not being literal God.
I also kind of don't like how universe isn't really lewd like the ryo ohki ova is
is it worth it for the beach episode?
yeah I didn't even notice but that's missing too. I guess they had to tone it done because it was for TV?
>I liked the whole space adventure, Kiyone being the "straight man" to Mihoshi,
I am only 5 episodes in but I'm just not into the set ups and character relationships so far. Ayeka isn't even obsessed with her brother anymore.
yeah I think since it was tv they decided to go for less of an ecchi feel to it. I'm sure one of the big tenchi lore anons here knows more though but thats what I remember hearing
It's decent, and I personally love the Time & Space episodes, but it lacks that magic that the OVA has even today.
they time travel?
Not really, it's been a moment, but I'm pretty sure something in Washu's lab exploded and everyone wound up in some Lotus Eater dream. The whole thing was based off an audio drama, and the only ones I recall specifically are Mihoshi's where she's Tenchi's wife, Sasami is their daughter, Ayeka is his spinster sister that won't move out, Ryoko is the bitch from next door trying to get her man, and I can't remember where Kiyone was; and Sasami's that was a stealth pilot for Pretty Sammy where she's a student and Tenchi is her big brother, Ryoko and Ayeka are in his class, Mihoshi and Kiyone are teachers, and Ryo-Ohki is Sasami's talking animal that lets her become a Magical Girl. The end of her story has always set me uneasy.
Wait, I remember one more, Ryoko's was pretty much her and Tenchi as Bonnie & Clyde. 1920's, Tommy Gun, robbing banks, etc.
Universe has its own charm and I would say it was a great decision to go in their own direction instead of just doing a remake of the OVAs. The stories are all fit together and there's nothing is left over. We see more of the friendship/rivalry of Ryoko and Ayeka, the incest in the Masaki bloodline disappears, Kagato has a personal vendetta with Yosho, Tenchi is a bit older and more mature and brave, among other things, like the cute Kiyone.
You should not give up OP, it gets better and it leads to a great ending. After that you should check out the two movies, Tenchi in Love and Forever. In Tenchi in Love we explore Nobuyuki's past and the reason he is the way he is, we also discover who was Achika the mother of Tenchi. Finally Tenchi Forever explores the minds, dreams and feelings of Tenchi, Ayeka, Ryoko and Yosho even further while also taking a really mature approuch about learning to let things go and growing up.
I haven't seen it but I think that might be an OVA actually. The Mihoshi special.
My favorite part of the episode.
Nah, he is right. That's one of the episodes of Universe.
I'm holding the DVD right here, episodes 11, 12, and 13.
Universe has Kiyone (everyone seems to dig her much more than I do personally), and it has a bangin opening. That's it.
>I would say it was a great decision to go in their own direction instead of just doing a remake of the OVAs.
It's barely a different direction though. A lot of the stuff from the OVA is present so far, seemingly just scrambled up and executed in a worse way.
>the incest in the Masaki bloodline disappears
>Kagato has a personal vendetta with Yosho
Didn't Kagato have a personal vendetta with Yosho in the OVA too? And I wasn't a huge fan of the incest in the OVA but it was also kind of reasonable? And Ayeka is more annoying without it so far.
Alright I'll keep watching it then. Those episodes sound interesting at least.
I don't like any of the girls as much as I like Ryoko and I already feel like Universe kind of butchered her character. Mihoshi was hotter in the OVA too. Maybe I'll like Kiyone though idk.
>Didn't Kagato have a personal vendetta with Yosho in the OVA too?
Not really. Only thing he had against Yosho was the fact that Yosho had taken away his favorite toy, Ryoko. Other than that, it's his general dislike of the Royal Family.
>A lot of the stuff from the OVA is present so far, seemingly just scrambled up and executed in a worse way.
Sure, but the direction it takes is different and eventually these characters learn to stand on their own with their new personalities and stories.
>Didn't Kagato have a personal vendetta with Yosho in the OVA too?
Nah, and his hatred was more related to the crystals of the sword and the Royal Family. In Universe the reason is personal and also his relationship with Yosho is different.
>And Ayeka is more annoying without it so far.
Ayeka little by little also grows as a character and her rivalry with Ryoko helps a lot with that. Especially in the two movies.
>Alright I'll keep watching it then. Those episodes sound interesting at least.
Yeah it gets better. I also saw the OVAs before Universe and it was pretty weird to see a different take on the characters, but eventually the show won me over and now is my favorite version of Tenchi.
Okay yeah I remember now. Because Tenchi fought him to save Ryoko.
>the crystals of the sword
that too.
>Yeah it gets better. I also saw the OVAs before Universe and it was pretty weird to see a different take on the characters, but eventually the show won me over and now is my favorite version of Tenchi.
I started watching Universe last year and ended up dropping after the first 3 episodes because I was kind of bored and not intrigued. And then about 2 months ago I decided to give Tenchi Muyo another chance and wound up watching all of the first OVA in one night. I was confused cause I thought it had been some of the OVA I watched before but it was actually Universe.
Oops, got confused. This was meant for Tenchi In Tokyo. Universe is not THAT bad.
So when is Tenchi getting a game?
It got two VNs back in the day, one for the OVAs, one for Universe.
Did they let you romance different girls?
?
Dunno, they've never been translated and the descriptions are pretty sparse and generic.
its kind of weird how the dub is really shitty but also really good at the same time
There is a super nintendo tactics style RPG.
Most of the voices are great, but their delivery is occasionally a little stiff.
Washu's nasally voice should be line nails on a chalkboard, but I love it.
yeah maybe thats it. I thought Ayeka's weird British-y accent was really ugly and unfitting the first time I heard it but it grew on me within like an episode.
