Why do people hate subaru?

I don't quite "get" him, to be perfectly honest. He's not exactly the typical isekai protag, but he's not different enough to be interesting/fun. He seems to be full of contradictions. Like, he's not scared of the new world and all of its weirdness, which is typical of the newer isekai protags who know about isekai beforehand... but, although he tries, he's not really good at using his previous knowledge to his advantage like those typically do. He fucks up a lot and struggles with his return by death and with just about everything really, but he doesn't seem to be the loser isekai protag that experiences a lot of hardship early on because they're lost and confused, hell, half the time he's being a cheerful fool trying to make friends with everybody and generally goofing around.

Now, the obvious take here is that him being atypical is what's good about him. But, in my opinion, being different is not the same as being compelling. So he's in this weird middleground, where a typical isekai viewer that wants his main guy to be powerful or cool or smart is stuck with a guy who doesn't really know what he's doing and is not very good at it, while a viewer that prefers a fallible, loser-ish protag that'll suffer initially and then pick himself up later (like I do), has trouble reconciling his cheerful demeanor, ease to make friends and get by in the new world, with his lowest points when he gets really scared and emotional.

He's a weird one that Subaru. But I don't like him very much.

that's an invention of the anime, later (what would be 3 episodes later) Subaru reciprocates Rem's feelings

him not loving Rem in the anime is a very good reason to not like him, as it's contrary to his own character development in the novels. his entire character arc was him supposed to becoming very attached to Rem, him friendzoning her or ignoring her advances or whatever you want to call it, is cheating the audience. The plot beats, the themes, is all supposed to pay off with Subaru confessing to Rem. What the audience gets is no pay off and feel cheated.

He refuses to grow as a character even after a season and a half, and it's difficult to empathize with the decisions of someone whose stupidity stems from "I love Emilia because she was the first person I met." I think Emilia and Rem were the worst things to happen to this story. Personality black holes who exist to drag the protagonist in circles.

He looks so repulsive and ugly, that I can't fap to re zero doujins that he is in.

He's an autistic weeb that has zero emotional intelligence, and no common sense. All of his dialog feels contrived, and pandering because it is. Almost every show now is nothing more than weeb self indulgences. The medium as a whole will never be good if it doesn't try to challenge its audience. Subaru plus the show itself is a microcosm of most everything wrong with anime as it is day.

He's an actual retard who never bothers to take steps to get ahead of the regular disasters that befall him. He's basically clueless about the world around him, despite having a wealth of people who are even more well informed than the regular citizens. He's never bothered to seriously ask about the witch or her cult, despite that being a literal life or death matter to him AND BEING DIRECTLY PHYSICALLY IN FRONT OF HER WHILE SHE TELLS HIM TO HIS FACE TO ASK HER ANYTHING. He only has a rudimentary understanding of how magic works in this world, and no clear idea what it's limits are. The selection process is still a mystery, as is exactly what the shit winning even means. Betty is clearly supremely powerful, and is somehow related to the witch cult, yet when that came up before this whole Sanctuary shit he just shrugged it off.

Everything surprises him because he doesn't ever bother to learn anything. He skips through the easy parts, when things are going well, with a wealth of warrantless self confidence (I realize most of this is an act he puts on, but it's still grating) then expects sympathy when he traipses into yet another trap.

And I'll still watch it, despite Subaru, because I think the setting/world building and mystery are actually pretty compelling. Subaru's active avoidance of learning anything about the world is ironically the only thing keeping me interested in his show.
