Character Development

What's the best character development you've seen in manga or anime? Conversely, what are some of the worst?

>haha I'm a happy child
>actually I'm edgy and I'll kill you
Gon is truly the epitome of character development

Imagine if Isayama wrote Chimera Ant arc. Meruem appears like evil monster and tyrant then we don't see him until palace invasion and now suddenly he's merciful and respectful person, 10 flashbacks appear to show how he played gungi with Komugi off screen and how it changed him. Lmao

>shonenshitters immediately go into damage control
I'm loving this.

There honestly was no actualy growth with Gon. He was a brat from the start to end.. And then he got pissy when his world fell apart... Over 1 person that he knew from his childhood... Gon is a really bad character. Making me wonder WHY they even made him the protagonist. He is first interested in finding his father.. Does the hunter exam.. becomes a hunter.. Doesnt do hunter work. Just going on his own selfish quest to find his dad... Ok... Spoiled brat much. His friend from the hunter exam Kilua tags along, because why not, seems fun. Ok. You know his character. Carefree. But also cold, calculated and rhutless.. We know where he came from. A Family of ASSASSINS. He is mentaly prepared for MANY things. Gon.. He was sheltered in some village.. Kept away from the wholle world. And when he started to see the world, for the reality it is.. Well.. He breaks down. Because he wasnt prepared. Thinking that he can just defeat everyone.. And nothing bad will hapen. That one guy, Kite is killed.. And somehow. His only focus is.. Killing The trap cat ant thing. Not even caring about saving the PEOPLE THAT WILL MAYBE DIE BECAUSE OF THE ANTS. Nope. All he cared about was "saving" Kite... Nothing more. Like a spoiled brat. Its why he breaks down and goes full on psycho when he does.

Yet even the last chapter proves me right...SnK character developement is mostly flashbacks, almost nothing important happens in real-time, it all happens while characters are dozing off and muh memories... Isayama can't into character writing, that's why he resorted to a timeskip like a typical hack shonen writer instead of depicting Shitren's change organically. SnK is an amateur work.

People hate hunterfags because you always cherrypick.

Vegeta had better development than Gon

Fact: Hunterchads are the only fanbase who can make intelligent OC. From this we can extrapolate the obvious: HxH is the smartest manga ever made.

The best is by far Hunter x Hunter, the masterpiece from Togashi-sensei. Seeing the change Gon went through left a deep impression with me. Unlike shonen characters, Gon felt gritty and all too real. His determination made him grow into a monster only for him to be reminded that at the end, he still was human and had to to pay with his human body. Gon stands as an inspiration to all men with his stoic resolution.

The worst development by far, if not outright regression, are all of the strawhat pirates. They evolve only for this change to be forgotten by the next arc. They then continue to act the same way they did when they were first introduced. This shows that Oda does not understand what character development is.

cringe

Unironically Naruto.

Naruto was a child who faced neglect and as an internalized response became loud and obnoxious always seeking attention.

Right off the bat you had a well written, fully active lead character, who's actions and personality comes with genuine justification.

Sadly this is becoming a thing of the past cause it's some much easier to writer a generic self insert like Deku and Eren. Instead of an actual character, with an actual personality, justification for said personality, able to show a variety of genuine emotion.

How Oda does characterization nowadays:

>franky does something stupid while yelling SUPER
>Zolo taking a nap.
>Usopp, Chopper, and Luffy get glittery eyes and does that wavy arm thing
>Brooke either gets slapped by Nami or makes a shitty joke
>Sanji does something perverted and gets a nose bleed
>Robin puts Franky down some more

I'm seriously trying to think of any meaningful conversation the crew has in the last few arcs, that isn't related to the island of the week/current plotline.

"Character development" only exists when the character is a child or a teenager. Adults are mostly set in place for the most of their lives, with little to no fluctuation in their personal habits. People who all of a sudden try to "change" their personalities are hit with the sudden realization that it's useless and that they are playing pretend trying to counter their naturalized brain chemistry

You don’t actually believe this do you

>"Character development" only exists when the character is a child or a teenager
that's called growing up
>Adults are mostly set in place for the most of their lives, with little to no fluctuation in their personal habits
true, but if character development happens in this stage then it's great

HxH is just better than SnK, simple as.

Based Narutochad. Oda does not know to give his characters meaningful development.

>His determination made him grow into a monster
I feel like too many people dramatize Gon’s descent. He went downhill into a very dangerous and scary state of mind but he never crossed the threshold of becoming a monster. He gets close, and absolutely would have crossed that line without Killua using reason to rein him back in to his senses, but he doesn’t cross it. He used Komugi as a bargaining chip but never went out of his way to hurt her. He had no reason to trust Pitou’s words or actions. Outside of his own self-destructiveness he doesn’t actually do anything wrong.

That’s fair but both are pretty good.

Its such a clusterfuck.
I enjoy HxH but man does Togashi need to trim the fat in this arc.

Literally the same problem as wan piss. Bloated arc with a bunch of useless characters and way too much build up before anything interesting happens. How does anyone read this?

Based and nenpilled.

Imagine a chart about Chimera Ants Arc.

Tell me how I know you haven't read the Succession War arc.

The mafia groups have no reason to exist.
25% of the guards could be cut and nothing would change whatsoever.

>inb4 hunterniggers come in with the
>"muh braindead shounenfags "
>the buildup...totally won't fall flat on its face...togashi...h-he's reading philosophy in the hiatus! We hunterchads truly are blessed...

It's all so tiresome really. Cope all you want, but togashi has abandoned you.
>Q-quality takes time, a brainless shounenshitter wouldn't know... S-See? Look at [ philosopher/esteemed writer] He took decades finishing his magnum opus!!
...

>just gold experience
Sasuga Togashit

>t. Shonenshitter

You haven't read it. There are 19 deaths already, more than the entirety of Wan Piss, each having meaningful ramifications in the flow of the war, and side characters are obviously treated with significance just like Welfin in CA.

DING DING DING

>YES
>DEATH DEATH DEATH BLOOD BLOOD BLOOD
>I AM SO MATURE
Having a bunch of irrelevant characters only to have them as death fodder doesn't make your series better.
If anything it makes it look worse.
Togashi is a good writer, there's no debate about that.
I don't see why he's playing the weakest card (death) in the writing deck so often

Is it because he said "before anything interesting happens", which is axiomatically untrue because nothing at all has happened since 2018?
