Is Utena a series that takes a while to get good?

Just asking, i have heard about Utena being a classic for a while now, but 6 episodes in and it's not clicking at all, it's...fine but i get a bit bored, and the more anime like scenes just feel shoved in for no reason, like that one scene where Nanami daydreams about putting disgusting things in Anthy's room, a joke that i felt dragged on a bit too long.

I get it's doing something different, it just...well, i am not enjoying it so far, but it made me wonder, is this one of those series that only gets good midway through or by the end?

One of those series where the first episodes are absolutely the weakest, because so far, Utena has just been suprisingly boring for the most part.

It's an acquired taste of a series. Nothing you've seen so far is pointless, but it does alienate some people.

I think the first arc is the weakest, but not everyone shares that opinion.

You'll be bored the whole way through. If anything it gets worse.

If it takes a while to get "good" then it sounds like its a pile of shit

It's a good anime but it appeals to specific tastes. Definitely not something you should force on yourself to see if it gets better, but if you're feeling open minded, try to switch your mindset to match the structure and delivery of the series.

If you don't like it by Juri's episode, drop it, seriously.

this. OP, I was like you. Fell for the hype. Downloaded every episode and after the first arc, everything else just gets redundant. Not worth your time. Just drop it. If you still want to watch, for your time go for the movie.

A lot of "classic anime" are sacred cows. I think that Utena is not bad, but I think that they way some people describe it is completely nonsense and wrong. Despite me thinking this, Utena is still one of the better anime shows of its time, easily, because most anime (this one included) is a slog and an exercise in weirdness. Western animated shows were always better and more snappy. People will put up with shows like Utena because they've heard talking-points, from people who possibly haven't watched it, about it being elegant and thought-provoking, even though it isn't really.

if you don't like the style and can't notice the themes, you will never like it

i won't give you even a >you

I was the same way and dropped it.
It was a long time ago. Still like the OP (Rinbu Revolution).

skip to the last episode and decide if you want to go back and see how it got to that point

utena is pleb filter so much so you can even tell who missed the point even by watching it, either too pleb or a giant tumblrwhale

>people praising nu she-ra because of the utena insulting reference
>people praising stevenm universe for having references about utena
western is cancer

It's a crap series that pretentious losers on Zig Forums jerk off to so they can pretend they're smart. It's a boring anime that just try to cover that up being adding random arty imagery.

sounds more like you just didn't get it

Would you mind elaborating on the first one? Seen webm's for the second one, was a pretty cute reference.

cat girl saves she-ra in the same way utena tried to reach for anthy in the final episode but it seems like whoever directed the she-ra missed the point of the scene and confused it for a love confession.
typical westerner who only relates everything with sex

Im so done with you

If you didn't liked it by then just drop it, it will not get better or worse, it will stay the same

It's not clicking, nothing you can do. It's a weird series not even it's director could replicate the success of. If you are willing to give it a chance, try finishing first arc of 13 episodes, should give you more of an insight on how the series works.
1. The fact Utena even got into that situation was a love confession.
2. What Anthy did just before that was also a love confession.
And if you are trying to say that a thing in Utena is not related to sex, you know nothing.

you're just making it sound like utena just wanted to sleep with anthy, she's not your typical american dyke who fights just for pussy bro, she saw anthy more than just a piece of meat and tried to help her out of that shell she was living in

as far as girly anime go it's this, Cardcaptor Sakura, Escaflowne (series not movie), and Rose of Versailles. anything else I've never liked.

I liked it since EP1 and it's one of my favorites anime. If you're bored then just drop it, maybe it's too shoujo for you and the style of "show don't tell" didn't click with you.

just watch it nigga

Keep in mind that a fucking ghost fucked everybody. Not before he was still alive, it was after he became a ghost.

I would say so. I began enjoying it once the show had firmly established the cast and its routine, then began breaking it all down in unexpected ways. I'd say episode 10 or so was where I really got into it into it. Before that, it was just easy viewing.

Everything in Utena is about sex.

Or it was adapted by a clown studio, which was the case for Black Clover.

>a series that takes a while to get good
If you don't like it from the start you probably won't like the rest of any series. Personally I enjoyed Utena but it looks like it's not for you

Seriously, how did Ikuhara make one of the best anime of all times when all the others he's been involved in (including the movie) have been shit? Is that how good art is made? Just by pure coincidence?

The movie is great.
