If a bunch of cut in half praying astronauts in the middle of a grass field isn't surreal horror then I don't know what it is.
Based, how short these stories ended up being made my skin crawl.
Considering it's during an encounter with the embodiment of mankind's fear of darkness, I'd say astronauts are the most at-risk of being consumed by it.
You're not disproviing me. Surrealism is based on free associations and dream logic. Dead astronauts as a symbol of someone consumed by darkness is how surreal horror would represent the fear of darkness while non-surreal subgenres would use something more literal like a psycho with a knife inside of a dark room.
A couple are completely hilarious too. People being racist to the ghost ninja family, the door that is sad because the MC won't pee on it, face snatcher with the 'fuck I missed' expression, the grandpa who is pals with a ghost and tag teams with it to scare the shit out of his kids.
Fuan no Tane is a must read.

The plot is that 'devils' embodying human fears are making a ruckus and Japan has an official Ghostbuster agency to get rid of them. The darkness devil apparently keeps upside-down astronauts as garden gnomes, so we see a bunch before the big man makes his entry.
I've seen a lot of people talking about this series. Think I'll check.
