This plotline saved the second half of the show for me. The writers gave up on Hiro and Zero Two for some reason, and the Kokoro and Mitsuru plotline was much more interesting than the alien crap

I like how in the manga they cut out all the drama by making the guy let her go since he realized she wasn’t into him.

Asking her to reject him flatly is like asking him not to unilaterally project his feelings onto her.

It was a painful communication failrue to witness in the anime but the lack of it in the manga made them stupidly mature.

I think people tend to forget the context of the rest of the episode. Fatty was upset, but he was doing his damnedest to respect her decision despite how broken up he was over it. The issue was Kokoro, who lacked the emotional capacity to realize what she'd done. To her, fatty and Mitsuru were both friends and she just wanted to heal the later, which wouldn't affect her friendship with the former. You can see it later in the episode when Fatty's trying his hardest to hold back his tears when talking to her and she doesn't even seem to realize why.

Well, her accelerated aging was probably a result of her depleting her life force to shoot away the rocks, so it was too late for her. Futoshi on the other hand could still be saved somewhat, because thanks to being fat, he had more life force, and thus only got some grey hair.
Miku probably became infertile because of her being paired up with Zorome, which, although personality wise they did compliment each another, on a sexuality level, they absolutely didn't mesh well at all, so the constant strain from piloting the franxx made her unable to procreate as well and age faster.
Shame, since Miku did have great genetics as well, like Kokoro.
