During the Bakumatsu, Kenshin marries a mysterious woman, Tomoe. Secretly, she's part of a plot to kill him, to avenge her first love. But by living together, she realizes he's a good man, and though he killed many, his sword will protect many more. "He took away my happiness, but then he gave me a new one". She's taken by Kenshin's enemies, and he fights to get her back. But as he's about to be killed, Tomoe intervenes and is accidentally killed by his own sword. Kenshin abandons his role as an assassin in favor of fighting in the war, and swears once the war is over, he'll never kill again. However, Enishi only saw Kenshin kill Tomoe, and his quest for revenge was born.
