Look up the history of the income tax. Formerly considered unconstitutional, finally bullrushed through with an amendment, at first it was only 1% taxed on the absolute richest because of a wartime emergency with WW1, then expanded in WW2, then retained and expanded MASSIVELY post-WW2 (despite originally being promoted as a temporary emergency stopgap), and now the replacement for tariff income, which was primarily levied on rich business owners dealing with imports and exports.
Now you get punished for waking up and going to your wage slave job. If you had 20% more of that income going into your pocket, and invested it all, you could retire 10+ years earlier.
Remember, billionaires don't pay income taxes. Their wealth is held in capital assets that aren't taxed the same way, and they commonly leverage that to avoid taxes altogether (with offshoring and creative tax accounting). Which is why they will always trumpet income taxes, why user that's just a tax on working class people!
