Imagine not studying 日本語 and still relying on subs/localizations.

An actually good example of localization I recall was in the Steins;Gate anime where they replaced the really specific 2channel memes with roughly equivalent American internet memes. There really wasn't any good or elegant way to explain the Japanese memes without a wall of text each time. Changing to American memes got the idea of what they were doing across.

Havent seen the Steins Gate dub. Do they reference this website or reddit? I'll guess it's the latter. It would be nice if they pointed out little things like how Okabe was a huge tripfag

it's not about being able to "understand" what's going on by being given a similar, more western replacement for something uniquely japanese, it's about experiencing something uniquely japanese in the first place. If the media is enjoyable because it has a characteristic and unique Japanese aspect to it, you don't want to view it in a Western context, you want the ability to view it in its own context, in your language. That's the whole point. How could you possibly hope to understand the quirks of Japanese writing that draw you to Japanese works in the first place if you replace anything you don't understand with western writing? You've just ensured that you'll never be able to understand the very things you want to learn about and experience in the first place.

Translation is always pretty much a shaky game. No two translators will ever translate the same line of dialogue in the same way. The semantic shitfests translators can get into when they go at it are really fucking pathetic.

Not the dub, the sub. In S;G there have "@channel" which is stand-in for the real-world Japanese 2channel board. Okabe uses references to actual real-world memes from that board to get Kurisu to show she's also secretly a huge nerd who posts there. It would be hard to explain what those specific memes are, so they replace them with Western equivalents. I thought it was a clever workaround since you still understand that it's showing Kurisu is more of a nerd then she pretends to be.

Where do you draw the line? For example, I hate Commie's release of one of the Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OVAs. They took a chapter based on wordplay and rewrote pretty much all of the jokes.

I agree, but the monogatari example is super rare, I struggle to think of another localisation example as good as that one.

I can't remember how many subbers there were on the show, but seeing those old references on any one of them these days is really meta.

They even replace "if naan were nyan" with this, causing a complete disconnect with what's on the screen and the jokes. At what point is it acceptable for translators to decide that the audience won't get the joke and that they need to write completely new ones?

It should never been acceptable.

That's why it's called a "local"ization. There's no unique way of translating things.
I'm honestly fine with localizing dialogues if you want to dub them afterwards, as long as it is faithful. (But dubs suck anyway)
I think translators should simply come clear with the type of audience they are targeting, whether it being a more casual public or people that actually want a faithful translation with some side notes if needed.

It wouldn't be as bad if there were any other subs for the BD special, but there aren't.

I am fine if they rewrite the whole thing but I like it when they add a extra page explaining the original thing and why it couldnt be translated word to word. Otherwise I feel I am being lied to.

For example I really like stein gates VN, obviously because I am a fucking weeb I know most otaku stuff but they go out of their way to explain some japanese on the tips so normal people can catch up and that way leave some stuff like sufix, streets names, puns, etc.

Daily reminder that a non-Japanese person has no idea what "Good localization" is to begin with, and is incapable of recognizing bad Japanese voice acting.
