I've actually watched some magical girl series pre-2000 and so I don't particularly like it. It's not even really Madoka's fault though since Madoka is a good series and doesn't overdo the suffering aspect imo. But apparently people interpreted its success as "let's make magical girl torture porn" which doesn't make for particularly good shows unless you just want to see anime girls brutalized. Madoka was another good thing that somehow managed to inspire a lot of garbage and that kind of thing has happened time and time again in pretty much every medium.
