Utena and Yuri Kuma Arashi are cheating because 99% of people don't know what the whole show is about.

Doesn't help that she has 3 completely different characterizations for each adaptation

Looks like Lain.

The same character designer.

It says the novel and manga had the same writer, did he just fucking go insane between those 2 projects or what? The manga is so ridiculously dark

He's a newt himself. The primary message was that there would be no mysterious girl randomly entering your life to save you.
Even in the anime, which is the most lighthearted of the 3, the 'salvatuon' comes because he actually starts working, just from having to do it not to starve.

Ironically, the success of the novel might be the reason that didn't happen to the author.
Its very possible he felt there was too much hope and wish fulfillment thinking in his earlier depiction and went even darker as if to ensure himself he shouldn't get his hopes up and dream of a stranger to save him.

He got a ton of money from the series and now has a band. He is currently writing another novel. From what I've seen following his ig, it seems he lives an okay life, just like any writer/artist

The author is not int he same state any more. Not sure when it started, but maybe it was when he joined some positivity cultish thing years back. I don't think he is much into that any more, but I do know that he and friends have formed an indie band. Even when he writes nowadays he seem to do it in cafes.
He is definitely a lot more active and social than before.

That's a relief to know.
Did he write the Manga during the time he started to get better, or before that?

Novel > Manga >>> Anime

Everything I have mentioned is after, a lot after. That said I am not sure how much the original authour was actually behind the story in the manga. Or I guess I don't remember whatever was written in the afterwords.

the original welcome to the nhk story is written during the time he was a neet, the manga was written during the time he kept being a neet but with royalties iirc. All in all it looks like he is doing a lot better than when he wrote the story. There are three author's notes he wrote, with the third one being back in 2016 where he looks back at that period in his life, when I find a link I'll post it here

All his characters suffer from same face syndrome.

>reddit
On the other hand
>nanpa
So it took him 4 more years to start writing that nanpa isekai novel.

>The manga is so ridiculously dark

What's this, I've never looked into the manga. What's different? What makes it so much darker?

I have a better understanding of anime/NEET culture now, guess I can re-watch it and actually enjoy it.
