A Tomboy is ultimately just a girl with predominant personality traits/interests others would consider boyish rather than anything physical, however this becomes more and more muddled as gendered traits and interests become considered more unisex. I'd say Japan's stricter gender roles ironically allow for more pronounced tomboys in media. The "tomboy aesthetic" is more typical in anime because it's a visual medium where the artist has incentive to easily and quickly communicate "THIS IS A TOMBOY" so they'll be a very visual and exaggerated version of a Tomboy much how a delinquent or nerd are somewhat cliched depictions. These threads are usually for the aesthetic but I haven't known them to turn away Tomboys that are purely based in personality.
