Reasonably popular, but most people don't understand English that well so even people hardcore into anime who go to cons and shit have a shallow and skewed idea of what anime is like. A lot of the more otaku-centric stuff doesn't make it here at all, for example.
Not sure if it's the same as it was when I used to actually buy physical anime magazines(probably is desu), but one exception was the fujos. There was crazy intense fujo population who put dumb amounts of effort into their boys love obsession. If anyone in the anime fandom actually learned Japanese because they were such weebs it was the fujos.
