I haven't watched the show, my issue with the series as a whole is that I used to read the mangaka's touhou doujinshi and they were pretty good but the manga was just incredibly boring and bland in comparison.

For me it's when the romance is only secondary to the main plot and the two characters in question form a relationship through their exploits together. A genuinely interesting story and yuri, what more could you ask for?

You have to be careful not to make the romance too secondary or the secondaries watching will be too stupid to pick up on it until the very end when it becomes bleedingly blatant, and then they'll shit their pants crying that it came out of nowhere.
