I find the themes presented SAO to be extremely interesting and understated in most fiction. The exploration of the human mind, the difference between A.I and humanity, replication of reality vs true reality melts together in the way he writes mystery aspects of it.
Unlike Re:Zero, SAO actually manages to nail many different mentalities affected by PTSD and Kirito has been dealing with PTSD silently for a majority of the time after getting away from Aincrad. This explains a lot of why he's always fulldiving. He has tried to commit suicide-by-cop multiple times and once destroyed his own Self Image for 6 months because he hated himself that much at that moment. And who, even when he isn't a sad sack is slowly losing touch with reality and becoming a carbon copy of the villain he first defined himself fighting against.

It's mostly comedy, yeah, with some nice serious moment sprinkled here and there. It flows better, while yeah, re zero is more serious in the end and dramatic.

NGNL, and this is coming from someone who generally dislikes isekai.
Re Zero, up to where the first season ends was a thematically coherent tale that does a great job at delivering its core lesson. However, after that, I felt like it had said all it really needed to say and ceases to be very interesting in any significant way whatsoever.
NGNL might be bottom of the barrel trash from a conceptual standpoint, but the execution is just so damn good it actually elevates it to an enjoyable experience for me on a moment to moment level. When I first watched it I couldn't wait for each successive episode and even now I can't wait for a second season.
