So I just finished this series and I'm still trying to sort my feelings out, lemme see if I got the lore right:
The Earth got fucked up and needed some time to recover, so everyone got sent out to that hourglass-like world which was actually a space colony. In the meantime, the Guild was supposed to take care of everyone, but they had some internal conflict and house Eraclea ended up purging the other ones from their domain, Alvis was from the house that had the ability to activate the Exile. The technical knowledge about the weather devices and the Exile that the Guild had was lost and this caused the weather anomaly that led to Anatoray and Disith fighting against each other. In the end, the Exile was the ship used to take everyone to the colony and now after the Guild is finished they return to Earth and find it fully recovered. Am I missing something? The series was a little hard to follow at times, so I'm not sure.
Anyway, I enjoyed it quite a lot, the vanship races and the air battles were fun, the characters feel well-rounded for the most part and it's probably the best-looking show Gonzo has ever made. Should I watch S2 if I want more Last Exile or is it shit?
That's pretty much it, I actually like how the backstory of the show is presented as a puzzle and you can connect the dots with the hints given through dialogue and some visual cues. I wish we got more on the Guild, though, it felt like there wasn't enough time left to make their backstory clearer, so they just left it with some mentions/allusions to what happened.

Also, you can watch Silver Wing if you want, it's not a terrible sequel, but it has a completely different atmosphere and the main characters are pretty annoying. If you can get behind that, it's kind of enjoyable.
Blake Phillips
Last Exile was great. As for S2, I agree with this user Just wait a bit until you're in the mood for vanships again and you're probably going to have an alright time. It doesn't compare to the original though.
Mason Rodriguez
A lot of the lore of this show was only mentioned in guidebooks (forget S2) that you didn't read. Still, you got it right kinda.
Well, I did find the lore to be the most interesting part, so I'll give S2 a shot for that later then. Damn, that's a lot of stuff, I'll read through it to see what else I missed out on, thanks user.

By far one of the few anime that was actually good and didn't rely on waifus to guide the story. It's good, it beats anything that snkfags and my cuck academiafags like in this day and age.
David Morgan
keep in mind the S2 came a decade + after the original series and is kind of a shitty nostalgia cash-in. (good 1st episode tho)

still blows my fucking mind they had almost passable greek in the show. Not greek letters, actual greek. You can read the peace treaty letter in (hella janky) greek in a screencap. But the meaning is clear and readable.

Don't watch Senpai, read the Travelers From the Hourglass manga instead

I mean F a m, the MC of the second season's name, fucking filter
Still stands out to me as some of the best character and mechanical design work in anime.
"I always wondered, "Why do anime characters have such big buttons? Why are the creases in their clothes so deep?" Things like that. And when I designed the characters for Last Exile, I tried to have them wear clothes that could exist in real life. With some knowledge of how clothing design works, I tried to draw in the kind of material that would have been used in creating their clothes and try to represent the stitches connecting the fabric."
I wish based Murata would work on a good anime again, after Last Exile his designs were wasted on shitty shows

The Anatomy, Disith, and the Guilt felt distinct and they managed to execute the level of detail required for steampunk that rex anime manage nowadays.
She was mad Alex wasn't romantically interested in her, so she used Claus to vent her frustration
Henry Young
Fuck that awesome.

I thought it was all English with Greek letters?
Anyway, I loved this show since I the first episode, I still don't know why, but decided to buy the show without watching it first, and everytime I got a new release it just kept getting better and better. Zig Forums usually bitches about the ending being a rushed shitshow but I loved all the resolutions of every character. If I have one complain, would be Dio surviving thanks to an asspull.
Silver Wing is OK I guess, but it gets pretty retarded with that officer being pranked with something about "your mamas calling you" or something like that, and while in the first series a Vanship can "barely" infiltrate or get close to Silverna or a major aircraft, in Silver Wing vanships are unstoppable machines that no one can take down. Main girl is kinda annoying as well.
LAST EXILE 10/10. Silver Wing 7/10 at most.

Opinions on Shangri-la?
No, I wish Murata drew an all-lolis anime. Fuck hags and fuck Sophia the orbiter. Euris best girl.
Carter Rogers
I always find these episodes where every bitch wants a piece of cloud annoying as fuck. Glad the avoided going into harem route.
Benjamin Young
I thought Senpai to be relatively fine as a character if a bit cliche. Her backstory is a wasted potential though. Glad the sequel isn't hated anymore on Zig Forums though.

Alex and Delphine's final moment get me every time. What a fucking alpha.
Carson Cooper
I don't think I've seen a more satisfying anime villain death so far, based Alex went out in full glory
