When is Human Instrumentality explained?

I just finished rewatching Evangelion, and what exactly the Human Instrumentality Project is never seemed to be explained. Do I only know what it is because of online discussion? It feels weird that such a huge concept would never be discussed in the show besides the name.

Never. It's stupid that they never bother to explain one of the most important parts of the show.

Damn, that's stupid

The show gives you enough clues to put the pieces together as to what human instrumentality is
also checked

When does anybody say anything about the blending of all consciousness?
also checked

I think SEELE talks about it sometimes.

the seele fags mention something like all minds will become one and fill in the gaps of others weaknesses to ascend or some shit

only retards skim that line, it's not like it made no fucking sense.
I swear these fags can't read

is that in EoE or the show?

EoE

Basically, Seele wants to become God. Gendo Ikari only really wants to see his wife again, even it's just an angel vision. The Human instrumentality project was a way to cause the Third Impact using Lilith, reuniting all of humanity into her again. Really it's just a plot device when it comes down to it so the author can bring his message across in the last 2 episodes of the show and the ending of EoE. Why do you think shinji Still chokes Asuka even after being the only human to retain his individuality after the TI? What is an AT field? It's all pretty spelled out for you if you paid attention.

>Why do you think shinji Still chokes Asuka
Why indeed? I never understood that part

retard it's explicitly spelled out in EoE

did you remember to watch the movie?

It was literally spelled out for you. Humanity is doomed to suffer being alone. It's the nature of humanity to hate others. Shit Asuka hates Shinji at the end, and it wasn't because he was choking her or the fact that he jerked off over her. She is disgusted by others because they will never be able to enter "her world", just as no one will be able to enter shinji's world. Humanity is doomed to vapid connections based around their 5 senses and will be in constant conflict with each other and themselves no matter what. AT fields are what cause this because they are what gave humanity it's individuality. Without an AT field we would all be one. It's a metaphor but can be taken literally. And i'm a faggot for effort posting this hard. I would recommend you just rewatch it because there is so much to unpack i'll never be able to explain it in a Zig Forums post.

In between the technobabble the SEELE guys spout off and Misato trying to explain it to Shinji during EoE in the car. Prior to that there are snippets in the conspiratorial conversations between Misato and her allies at NERV. It's never spoonfed to you, if that is what your question is (which I believe it is).

this
rewatching it clears up so much since you have more time to focus on the dialouge.

thanks, this is just what I was wondering

wrong. the end of both the show and EOE is an undeniably hopeful one. Shinji and Asuka, by going through instrumentality are finally able to overcome the Hedgehogs Dilemma and full understand each other, thats WHY they choose to reject it.

>but user, then why does shinji choke her?
because this is how Anno shows that theyve made the mental change. Shinji would NEVER have the gall to hurt someone before, he even says it in the Bardiel fight. However he is now able to take control of his life and make decisive choices. and he chooses to choke asuka BECAUSE its something he wouldnt do before. we also see Asuka gently touch his face instead of getting physical like she wopuld have before. in this way we see that both characters are new people and that the core dynamic of thier relationship (shinji being meek and asuka being headstrong) has changed. this shows that they have finally begun to accept who they are as people and have begun to change for the better

i need to get a hobby

>Why do you think shinji Still chokes Asuka
It's to symbolise the end of instrumentality. In instrumentality, no one can hurt each other but no one can comfort each other either. Therefore, the first interaction shown post-instrumentality is Shinji hurting Asuka, and Asuka comforting Shinji showing both aspects of human interaction. It also shows that the kitchen scene was in Shinji's mind, since the real Asuka reacts completely differently.

This is also the reason for the "Kimochi warui" line. It's ambiguous. Unlike in instrumentality, where you have direct access to other people's consciousness, now they're back in the real world where communication is ambiguous.

I think you're taking an overly negative view of things. While the series certainly deals with very dark themes, if you scratch the surface, the message is actually one of optimism and an encouragement to move forward.

>Shit Asuka hates Shinji at the end
As I said above, it's ambiguous.

>Humanity is doomed to vapid connections based around their 5 senses
There is an entire section of the original TV ending that delves into this and explains how you need to interact with other people to form a true sense of self. If you could just meld into a hivemind, you'd lose what it means to be human. The whole message of the show is given when Shinji accepts himself for himself. In the scene in EoE with pic-related, Shinji states his desire to leave instrumentality because only in the real world can he know his feelings are real.

Gendo refers to instrumentality as a return to the primordial womb, essentially running away from life. Regardless of how you feel about Freud, Anno draws heavily from his work, and the desire to return to the womb is referred to in Freudian psychology as the death drive. You seriously misread the series if you think it's pro-instrumentality.

When did i say that the series was pro instrumentality? I feel like you have a bit more hope when it comes to humanity than i do. In my opinion, the ending is very depressing because it forces you to acknowledge the truth of humanity. We will never be able to connect in any meaningful way and based on my own life experiences i would say that is as close to the truth of the human condition an author can really get. Shinji not being able to follow through on killing Asuka is anything but a hopeful ending and shows that he hasn't actually changed in the slightest. Sure, he was shown a path forward at the end of the series, but he won't be able to follow through on it as EoE shows. Inevitably, another organization is going to attempt the Instrumentality project again and the cycle will repeat itself and hopefully a day will come that humanity won't need to be reminded that there is a reason they are individuals and connect on a deeper level, being able to unironically say shit like "I love you" and actually mean it.

Onto another point that has nothing to do with your post, i really think it should have been made more clear that entering an EVA is escaping into the womb. I got it on my first watch because i had the "EVAs contain the soul of your mother" plot point spoiled for me before i even picked the show up.

Holy mother of god. That looks nice.

Is Aoba the most based character in the series?
>distrustful of the technocracy that his colleagues worship
>only one who doesn't patronise shinji after the dummy plug incident
>the only bridge crew member not thirsting for someone he has no chance with
>realises on his own that nerv is fucked as soon as the angels are gone
>fights to the last bullet at his station
>can't be emotionally tricked into instrumentality, has to be brute forced in by multiple reis
>sick air guitar skills

>sick air guitar skills

That would be Kaji. Without him, Seele would have actually "won" and humanity may have been fused into one forever.

Because of retards like you people think Eva is a depressing series. The ending is full of hope. Humanity will survive, as long as we are alive there will always be a tomorrow. Sure, some times bad things happen but those bad things don't define your persona. Don't be afraid of human interaction, in the end it is all worth it.

>Shinji not being able to follow through on killing Asuka is anything but a hopeful ending and shows that he hasn't actually changed in the slightest

But the fact that he started shows change. again, in the bardiel fight he says that he would never hurt someone even if it means he has to die. the fact that he starts to choke her unprovoked shows that he now has the ability to make strong choices that he lacked. the fact that he didnt kill her comes down to how Asuka herself has also changed and is now able to forgive and love others

as for the rest of your post IMO it comes down to personal beliefs and i cant really debate it in an eva context

without doubt

i agree but theres no need to be beligerent :D

Woah there user, i think you cranked up your AT a field a bit too high i'm unable to connect with this statement on anything but a hostile level. it's almost like you just proved my point by reacting in this way.

hol up isnt it rei that gives shinji the choice to turn back/instrument humanity?

>believed misato when she said she cucked him in college
>still had oneitis for her 8 years later
And SEELE still succeeded anyway. It's Shinji that undoes Instrumentality.

yeah, but SEELE is happy with the outcome that occurs. shinji just gives everyone a chance to escape it while SEELE woudlnt have

Oh I forgot that he must have a pretty high body count. Unless he missed every single shot and just waited until the JSSDF ran out of ammo

>finished rewatching eva yesterday
>that similar feeling of emptiness resurfaces just like when i first finished it
>its even worse now that i understand it

After finishing 26, I felt the weirdest emotion I've felt in a while. It was a mix of happiness after figuring out how to deal with some personal problems but also a void because I wanted so much more lol

The only reason, from my interpretation, that Shinji wasn't totally consumed by lilith/rei They are the same entity at least from what i was able to interpret was because he was in Unit 01. I could be wrong and am willing to hear other viewpoints.
Who gave Shinji the chance to actually be in a position to do that? Misato by manipulating Shinji into getting back in the EVA, and she only does that because she learns the truth about NERV and SEELE because of Kaji. He is the true unsung hero of humanity.

>watching Evangelion
>at all
>ever
That was your first, and greatest, mistake.

I too want so much more, but deep inside i know it would just be ruined if there was more.
I will not mention r*builds.

whats the matter user, 2deep4u?

Dude I get you. I even read some shitty fanfic where Asuka is a rapist and has a bite fetish. Also the equivalent of Raiden from Metal Gear is the antagonist. It was so hilariously bad

watch actually deep shoujo anime like madoka magica or mawaru penguindrum
